I'd say 3, since she needs her gross and fine motor skills to fully develop to perform.

She could probably take a Mommy and Me class when she's two or like a babies in motion class, but those are more exploratory classes from the Y or Parks and Rec, just meant for something to do. I think most studios don't offer dance classes (like where they learn a dance and perform at a recital) until 3 or 4.

3 for preschool ballet but they sometimes let in 2 year olds.
you could put her in music and movement dance classes. my cousin who is also 2 does that and she really enjoys it. they get to dance to music on their own and clap their hands. it's really cute and a lot of fun |

She should be able to handle it now. A lot of studios have classes for children that young. I know some of my friends that started when they were 1. Some studios have rules that they have to be potty trained but that is something you would have to ask the studio.

I am sure 2 is okay to start classes. Such as pre-ballet. You would really want to start dance at 3 or 4 if you want them to take it seriously.

With a late birthday like that age 2 should be fine if you're planning to sign her up starting next September (200
You may wish to go ahead and check out various schools in your area and talk to the instructors to make sure they will allow you to sign her up. Some dance schools do require children to be at least 3 years old and have a cut off date similar to academic schools. Some also may be willing to bend the rules if your daughter is capable of paying attention (as much as any 2 or 3 year old can ;) for the duration of the class. Beginning classes will probably go through the basic positions (for ballet) and work on teaching rhythm and coordination. You may also wish to sign her up for tap since the ballet/tap combo seems to be key for children just starting out. Wait a while for jazz, hip hop, etc since those styles are (imo) not age appropriate and require dancers to "break" the rules .. a dancer needs to know the right technique before they can start learning alternate techniques .. but all that is for later on down the road! I hope she has a wonderful time! |
